Problem running ZipMagic Stacker

Postby juancalvo » Sat Oct 25, 2014 9:04 pm

Dear Simon:
When attempting to run ZipMagic Stacker I get a message indicating: datadeduplicating services have not been installed, and the program stops.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Thank you, this is an excellent question.

To run Stacker, you need to have Data Deduplication installed. Unfortunately, because it is a Microsoft technology that is not included in non-Server Windows editions, ZIPmagic cannot legally install it for you.

However, the process to install it is rather straightforward - as long as you have a 64 bit PC, just follow these steps please:

For Windows 8.0: http://weikingteh.wordpress.com/2013/01 ... windows-8/
For Windows 8.1: http://weikingteh.wordpress.com/2013/10 ... ndows-8-1/

Just run the DISM command line after downloading the necessary packages. Then you'll be able to run ZIPmagic Stacker! You won't need to do anything else on the command line after DISM has run.

Stacker is definitely the strongest disk compressor available with ZIPmagic. Its only downsides are that it cannot be used on your boot disk, and it cannot be used on 32 bit operating systems.

Let's hope Microsoft enables data deduplication for client operating systems as well, so in future versions, you won't even need to worry about installing the services yourself!

Please enjoy :)

Thanks a lot for the information and the link to the files. Unfortunately my computer skills are not that strong. How do I run the .cab file? I mean de DISM command. Is it in the run command in Windows or in the c: prompt? Thanks again.

No problem!

After you have downloaded all files to a folder (preferably the same folder), just open PowerShell, and then copy/paste this command for Windows 8.0:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-VdsInterop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.2.9200.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-VdsInterop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.2.9200.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-FileServer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.2.9200.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-FileServer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.2.9200.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-Dedup-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.2.9200.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-Dedup-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.2.9200.16384.cab

Or this command for Windows 8.1:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-VdsInterop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.9600.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-VdsInterop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.3.9600.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-FileServer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.9600.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-FileServer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.3.9600.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-Dedup-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.9600.16384.cab /packagepath:Microsoft-Windows-Dedup-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.3.9600.16384.cab

Let it run, and then, when its done, just copy/paste this command:

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Dedup-Core /all

That's all! Now you can run Stacker :)

Thanks a lot. It worked except for the third .cab because I got the message (for Windows 8.1):

The specified package is not applicable to this image.
The specified package is not applicable to this image.
The specified package is not applicable to this image.
The command completed with errors.

If there is a way to get around this, I will appreciate knowing it.
Thanks,

That ought not have happened - did you download the correct set of files? Please double-check from the links I pasted earlier.

Yes. I used the links provided. It is strange that the other 5 files worked apparently 100% but not the third one. Maybe this happened to someone else and worked a solution. Thanks a lot.

What is the language of your operating system? Perhaps that is the issue.
